'Melbourne Declaration' affirms ASEAN and Australia partnership for the future

In March of 2024 Australia held the ASEAN- Australia Special Summit which celebrated the 50th anniversary of partnership and to discuss the next 50 years of partnership. ASEAN countries include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

They shared aspirations for the region's future, committing to work together to contribute to the maintenance of peace and stability, as well as enhancing the cooperation for sustainable development and prosperity.

They identified areas of practical cooperation for the future, ranging from deepening economic and socio-cultural ties to strengthening educational and environmental cooperation.

From the Summit the ‘Melbourne Declaration’ was established, and it was agreed that nationals  from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries and Timor-Leste now have more opportunities to do business in Australia.

This includes an extension of time for people from these countries who are here visiting to conduct business. This extension is intended to boost trade, people to people links, investments and grow jobs.
