The Federal Government has plans to place a cap on the number of new international students entering into Australia. This cap will be for 270,000 students, which will be spread out between higher education as well as vocational studies. These levels are designed to be the same pre-covid level, but will lead to a 20% reduction of the current international student population.
This proposed change still requires approval by the Senate but will mean Universities have a cap of around 145,000 and vocational studies a cap of 95,000 new international students. These caps will also be spread out between metropolitan and regional universities, with the goal to promote these regional universities by giving them more places than previously.
The aim of this limit is to promote regional Universities and have a higher rate of international students in these regional places such as universities in Wollongong, Tasmania and Newcastle. These changes will directly impact international students’ choices on where they choose to study and have the effect of bringing International students to these regional areas where there are worker shortages. On the flip side, the effect this will have is the application of visas for students will be via the regional temporary and permanent visa pathway
This proposed change comes after the Government has made changes to Visas which have impacted international students directly during 2023-2024.
These changes are only applicable to new students to Australia and is still waiting approval from the Senate, with an inquiry report scheduled to be released. Enrolments by tertiary providers have already begun for the 2025 year.
