THE MAN WHO CARRIES A GIANT CARROT AROUND MELBOURNE

The “Carrot Man” who carries the giant carrot is one of Melbourne’s easiest and most beloved personalities to spot travelling around the city streets.

Nathan is not just filling time, bus has recounted that he undertakes his daily trek carrying around the giant carrot simply to bring joy and happiness to people by making them smile. The small gesture has been part of his life for over a decade, which first began when he carried a giant turnip home from an op shop.

Noticing how it made people smile he continued carrying around large things, including a giant squid, but nothing gained as much attention as the giant carrot.

Nathan, who comes from a performance background, including clowning in hospitals believes he can achieve more outreach by strolling the streets making people smile on their daily commutes.

Nathan makes the carrots himself from paper machete, wire and tape. He donates his retired handmade carrots to charities, op shops and hospitals, and every few months he lays down a row of succulents on Fitzroy’s Gertrude Street – free to a good home.

Nathan also likes to give plants to a local aged-care facility and has become know for slipping French postcards under the doors of local businesses.

His popularity stops many, from locals like Jasmine Ruffilli to tourists who ask Nathan for photos. This photo of Nathan was taken by Jasmine in Gertrude Street Fitzroy.

There is even an Instagram account called @whereiscarrotman that uploads photos of Nathan and his carrot’s appearances around Melbourne which has gained quite a lot of traction over the years.
